I’ve used the same veterinarian for over 20 years, primarily because I liked his bedside manner and the personal attention provided by the staff.  Unfortunately, he sold the business and retired.  Now I’ve got to find another vet that I have as much confidence in, and am as comfortable with as the other one.  So where do I start?

  • The first thing I will do is ask friend, coworkers and family about the vet they use and if they’re happy.
  • If my current vet is available, I can try to get a referral from him.
  • I can also contact the state Veterinarian Medical Association or the American Veterinarian Medical Association for a listing of vets in my area.
  • I might check my local telephone book to find someone close to home.

Part of selecting a veterinarian is finding one that fits my needs.  I need to ask specific questions before making a final selection.

  • What are the hours of operation – do they have evening and weekend hours?
  • Are they located in a convenient location with ample parking near the entrance?
  • How many veterinarians are on staff and what is their experience?
  • Are the facilities clean and sanitary?
  • Are tests and lab work done on-site or do they use an outside service?
  • Is there an emergency service should I need a vet during off hours?
  • Will they allow me to come in and tour the office and facilities?
  • Is the staff knowledgeable and friendly?
  • Is the cost for regular visits reasonable?

My personal preference would be a vet that loves animals and will take the time to discuss my pet’s needs.  One of the most important things to me is that he/she understands the bonds I have with my pets and can help guide me through some of the more difficult decisions I may have to make for my pets.

Whatever steps you take to find a vet, take the time to make sure he/she can provide the level of service you want and can take care of any special needs your pet may have.  It’s not much different than finding a doctor for ourselves – we wouldn’t put our health in the hands of someone we didn’t trust or have confidence in.
